rom heel strikes to mid-foot strikes. They are great for trail running as well as road running, however, I would not recommend wearing them on trails with lots of gravel. You can feel every little thing under the feet- hence the barefoot running...
I haven't tried Nike Free, but I have Nike Lunaracers which are also very thin-soled. I like them as well.
My husband wears the VFFs for all his running and swears by them. He's planning on wearing them for upcoming half marathon in October. I, on the other hand, have to work up to that kind of mileage in VFFs. Transition from regular trainers to VFFs can't be rushed, so I had to start by running only 2 miles and increasing little by little.
