Describe your warmup:
I parked at Railhead Park which is where T2 and the finish were. I rode my bike to the swim start, a 6-7 mile ride.
Race Details - Swim:
The swim was hard for me. Since my wife and I had our first baby in January training has taken a back seat. Swimmming has been the least trained of the disciplines. I think I only swam 4 times since January! My time was 33 minutes(5 minutes slower than 2 years ago when I did the race)
Race Details - T1:
T1 was tough because I felt light headed as I got out of the water. As I mentioned earlier, i have not done much swimming and being horizontal for 30 minutes definately shocked my body
Race Details - Bike:
The bike at this race is the most difficult ride I have done. It starts in Folsom and climbs to Auburn. I believe that it is 1400 feet of elevation gain. The first 6-7 miles are almost all uphill. I worked hard to keep my HR down which I did not do the last time I raced here. I felt good for much of the ride and was jostling back and forth with a few riders which made the day more entertaining. Nothing bad, just being competitive and friendly...suffering together. Around half way through the ride it flattened out a bit and I really tried to hammer it. My goal was to ride the same time as 2007 so I kept a close eye on my watch. I thought that I rode 1:21 that year so I started to get very frustrated as I kept doing the math in my head an saw that i wasn't even close! Miles 14-15 were down hill and at one point hit 46 miles per hour! I am pretty sure that I have never gone that fast on a bike and it was quite scary. The problem is that I had to turn around and climb that hill a short while later. That climb is called "Lemond walked It" as Greg Lemond walked up the hill years ago during a long training ride! I fought hard the whole way back and finished in 1:31. I was disappointed in that time until I got home and realized that I rode 1:31 in 2007!
Race Details - T2:
I went quickly through T2...much easier than T1 and was very ready to get off of my bike and all of the hills.
Race Details - Run:
I began the run strong and passed several runners very quickly. I had never done this run as they changed it in 2008. The first 2 miles were on uneven single track. There was some undulation but it was not too bad. Then, at mile three we went to the road and STRAIGHT up hill! I slowed to 10 minutes per mile and was passing people with ease! It took a toll on my legs and my hamstrings cramped a bit. I had never experienced this in my life...even in an Ironman! The rest of the run was on a trail that was very undulating. It was very difficult and hard to get into a rhythym. I was also worried about cramping and really suffered through the end. Although my time was slow(47 minutes) I was proud of the run compared to most of the other athletes.
