Describe your warmup:
Short run warm up of around 10 minutes with some accels. Swam for 10 minutes with short accels to race pace
Race Details - Swim:
Started off the swim poorly. When I got in the water(which seemed very dirty and tasted like goose poop!) I didn't feel comfortable at all. My wetsuit seemed to have some water in it. I began the swim at an even pace and a few minutes in I was forced to stop for a second to catch my breath. I have not had to do this since my first race 3 years ago. I got into a better rythym after that and swam around 3 minutes slower than the year before which I expected.
Race Details - T1:
I got out of the water at T1 and felt ok. I was a little light headed but didn't have too much of a problem.
Race Details - Bike:
I felt good right when I got on the bike. I had a goal of beating my prior year time of 1:08 and immediately got into a good rhythym. The first 8-10 miles were solid until I got into a head wind section which was tough. I passed a lot of people early and was not riding at the same pace as anyone around me at this point. I was riding around 19 mph at this time. When we turned I felt great and had a good tailwind and was holding steady at 26 mph on the flat. This was good until Bailey Road and the switchbacks up a fairly steep grade. I stayed very calm as planned and kept my butt in the saddle. A few people passed me but they were out of their seat and really grinding. I told myself to stay patient and I would get them when we got to the flats. This was true as I rode very strong to the finish and beat my goal time by 2 minutes
Race Details - T2:
T2 was uneventful and my legs felt good
Race Details - Run:
I started the run with a goal time of 43:30. I felt pretty good at the start and was holding a 6:45 pace for the first mile. At this point i felt a twinge in my calf. I thought it would go away so I kept running. Unfortunately it did not go away at all. I tried to stop and stretch it out but that did not help. I continued to run with a bit of pain but was dealing well with it. I felt ok after this and was holding my pace between 6:45-7:05 per mile. At mile 4 I noticed a problem with the course. The mile markers were not the same as my Garmin GPS!! Things got worse as we rounded the back of Lake Almaden and I realized that there was no way that we were going to be back to the finish at 6.2 miles!! I was mentally beat down by this as I had a goal time in my head and was holding pace for that time and distance. I now had no idea how long the run would be(nor did my competitors). After a few minutes of being pissed I looked at my watch and saw I was running an 8 minute mile pace. I snapped out of it and finished ok. The run ended up being 1.2 miles too long due to a marking mistake(7.35 miles instead of 6.2). I ran around a 7:15 pace and was somewhat disappointed.
How did you do in this race?
4 - Better than I thought
What went well?
The bike went well as I beat my goal time. The run was going well as I think I would have beat my goal time for a 10 K but it was ruined by poor course marking.
What do you need to work on?
SWIM!!
If available, will you do this race again next year?
Probably
How would you rate the course and overall venue?
Good
How would you rate the Event Director and Staff?
Good
