Its probley been lifting weights or putting on bit of weight(muslce) as i was to skinny! It could also be relaxing and chilling out a bit

Best thing was getting into a routine, especially around sleeping. That way I was able to do more SBR!

The best thing I've done is to change my diet to allow me to lose fat and maintain muscle while still getting enough calories to train effectively.

I did a blood/urine/saliva test for hormones, vitamins, minerals, etc. Even though I eat healthy, get lots of sun, take a multi-vitamin, and I'm never sick, to my surprise, I found out I was:
-deficient in vitamin D, testosterone, and two essential amino acids
-I had too much calcium relative to magnesium
-I should have been eating a higher protein diet
I'm supplementing now and the difference is huge. Can't wait to take on the road to Kona in 2010 with my new body!

Non-PC version: Going tantric in the bedroom! Really helped me focus on going looonng! Just like on the bike, you can find a good rhythm, focus on HR zones, control breathing and get in the "zone". Its the one activity where being explosive has a place!
PC version: mental training and preparation. Its vital to scenario plan and not just enter the race with one, fixed plan. Consider all the options and coping strategies you have avaialble to you and prepare your mind to focus in your race on the following simple statement: "what can I do now to positively impact the situation I am in".

The best thing I ever did was to train and play rugby at a decent level. now I've stopped my times have gotten a lot slower!! Oh and marry my wife (she got me into the sport!)

Adding in some serious strength training. My coach talked me into doing CrossFit this season. I've seen some big improvements in my swim and my nagging injuries are staying away. Of course, I'm still slow but now I'm less slow. :)

lose weight - Running is so much easier when you can lose a few kgs of upper body muscle and fat. Otherwise 5 odd years of solid weight-training has left my body stronger in the hips, lower back and shoulders than many skinny racing snakes who crumble in the aero position after a few hours!

Lifting weights and yoga.
Yoga helps with core strength, flexibility, and man, it sure can help with the tricks your mind can play with you on the run.

By far the best thing that I have done non swim/bike/run is to make sure to spend some "quality training sessions" with my wife during the big build periods leading up to an Ironman. During training for my first race I was so fatigued that I let the need for rest, over run my desire for things only married couples should do. I think that pent up frustration caused some strife in terms of a physical relationship, "You can get out and ride your bike for 6 hours but you can't spend 30 minutes riding me?"
Back it up!
Now, no matter how tired, chafed, sore, or hungry I feel, when she gives me those eyes I perform like a true professional, she doesn't mind me leaving the compression socks on if it was a hard running day.
How does this help my training. As long as she is happy, she encourages me to get out there and hammer it. As a result I just qualified for Hawaii at Ironman Louisville finishing 3rd in my Age Group (35-39) with a 9:37:27.

Having kids.
Means I have to plan training sessions and get organised. No more procrastination cause if I miss a workout there isn't another time to get it in later. Kids get up by 9.00 am on weekend so have to get out of the house by 6am to ensure get long ride in. I also run alot at night after kids gone to bed. Yep kids definitely make you more focused and balanced- just look at John and Bevin
