2009 Chicago Half Marathon

This race went amazingly well. This was the race I had hoped to have for the KDF mini marathon.

Total Finishers 14,847

My
basic plan for this race was to pace myself better than I did in the
KDF mini, and not go out to fast so that I had didn't have anything
left at the end. I believe I executed that plan well for this race. We
arrived at the starting line a little over an hour before the race. The
wait actually went rather quickly. The race started a little late while
they were ensuring that Lake Shore Dr. was fully closed.

Here are my split times:
1 - 9:42
2 - 9:14
3 - 8:48
4 - 8:29
5 - 8:30
6 - 8:48
7 - 8:53
8 - 8:42
9 - 8:38
10 - 9:09
11 - 8:46
12 - 8:50
13 - 9:04

This
was a mostly flat course, and I really had a good time. I would go into
more detail for each mile, but really this was just a steady race for
me. One mile was not much different from the last. I stopped at 3 water
stops along the way about 4 miles (gatorade), 7 miles (water), and 10
miles (gatorade), and I used one bag of sport beans at the halfway
point. The water stops were the only walking I did during the entire
13.17 miles of this race. My previous best HM time was 2:09:23 so I am
very happy with this result.

Great execution of a race plan...The only thing that you might think about in the future is Power bar gels...They slide right down and have 100 instant calories of energy...I take one every 3 miles...3,6,9....I started with beans and found them hard to get down when your working hard...You could choke on them..If you train with gels you will get used to them...Alice and I are probably going to do the Indianapolis half marathon in Lawrence Ind October 2010....We want to see you there. Thanks Tim. I have been thinking about switching to the Gels as well. It's just hard to deal with the beans in a race. I'll make a note on my Calendar for the Indianapolis Half. next year. ;)

I love how you pushed in those middle miles..They are the hardest..The brain and fatigue can start playing on you...You feel off slightly on mile 10 but then dug back in...To cool...That extra GU may have helped you there...Anyway you kicked ass..Keep training...Its ok to back down...You have been through a lot...But your going to get faster if you keep up a solid base and then tune up with some speed work....Have fun at the next half ...One goal down....If you get a cool day you might think about going for a new PR...I am shooting for one in October...Later Tom.

Tom, I have moved to VA--will move into our house next week--so I've been really busy w/moving and the Marine Corps Marathon coming up. I am very impressed w/your Chicago half time. You did an awesome job. What an improvement. You really must be excited about the prospects. Great job!
