OK, after alot of soul searching, I am going to try my first half marathon on Oct 19th - Primo's. Many runners have shared the concept of' "if you can a 5K then you can do a 10K, if you can a 10K then you can do a half, and so on and so". I get the point, however, where does this silly logic stream end?

Back at it - Easy Run today - 5.6mi - SmartCoach suggests 9:12 miles did it with running buddy and talked the entire way - oh to be young again (he is 33 and an athlete). Felt great, time was slow 8:30's but comfortable, relaxed and not strained. Starting to get to point where I need to understand hydration strategies and how/when to accomplish during run. Long run tomorrow

Ran tempo run 5.6 miles with another runner getting ready for the half marathon. The weather was extremely hot (95 degrees) so the pace was slower and the time on route close to an hour. Not particularly concerned about pace since i missed my two easy runs (although combining is not good) . Rest/Xtraining tomorrow. Found a great feature on active.com - the creating the route. It is a great way to caliberate distances

First day of training for the half (its not like Im starting at ground zero - run 16-20 miles/week) and am going to adhere, as best I can to the regiment. I selected the plan from Smart Coach on Runnersworld. It targets the training to the exact race day and based on my experience seems pretty straight forward and about what I am doing now 16 to 20 miles a week

I should rest today, but need to get back on schedule. I did my long run 10 miler and followed most of the half course. I am concerned about nutrition during the race, I hydrated before I started and took two gel blocks to take at the 4 and 8 mile markers. The run built my confidence but I am fatigued, need a good day off. Back at it on Wed.

Last day before half, not sure if I'm doing this tapering right. Last run was Thursday, 4 miles very easy pace. I am spending alot of metnal time visualizing the course, the 5's, nutriution and pace. My objective is a) to finish, b) to break 2 hours and c) not kill myself. The first two I feel pretty good, the last one - not so much - just kidding. I have alot of folks giving me encouragement and support - so 24 hours from now we shall see if a 5 week training plan can get from 12K to a half.

Well, as part of errands, I dropped off my car to replace tires and ran a casual pace back to my house. Total distance 3.2 miles (beginnning of the half) with the hill included, felt good but again it was in the high 80's low 90's. Working to get back on training schedule, however, I dont want to miss an opportunity to get out, when i have energy.

WELL, I made it, it wasnt pretty but I survived my first half marathon with a time of 1:46:37 - alittle more than I should have done, but well ahead of my target. As many have told me, the finish is the hard part and they were right. Things started hurting at miles 11 and 12, my right knee. but I struggled on! I think my last mile was in excess of 10 minutes, yuck. My body is sore, really sore, the pain areas have been iced up and are starting to feel better, but I am not sure there is enuff ice

Although only one day of rest, i feel rested and ready to go. The weather has cooled and race should be in low 60's. Light breakfast and one energy gel before, about an hour prior to start time. One major issue - I got new shoes yesterday and they are very comfortable and light, but I am nervous about 1st use on race day. My new shoes threw off my pedometer, but the course had each mile marked, so I followed time at each mile and calculated pace to 8 mim/mile. Finished strong 58:24 for me!

Im starting to accept the notion that I can finish a half marathon, but in what time. My issue is the longest time I have run is about one hour, maybe alittle over but not much. So, I quickly go to another runner's website that can project your races times based on other distance races. I put in my data, cheat alittle, and the system says its going to take 1 hour:47 minutes. Geez, now I wondering can I make it. More research needed!!!

Several weeks back, during my denial stage, I met a woman at coffee who had just finished a run and I asking her about her running habits. As it turns out, this gal is what I would call an ultra marathoner and she shared how often she trains, her strategy in races and how I could make the leap from 10/12Ks to Half marathons. It was very inspirational and gave me a basis for preparation - mostly on pace, energy. I scoured the internet, downloaded a bunch of training plans, nutruition strategies

Instead of Saturdays long run, I did a 10K in Pleasanton and work pace and stamina. Felt great after, decent time for me (47:32) and good energy. I am resting today and will try the long run on Monday.

Again, I ran to meet my family at the store. A nice 5.6 mile run flat, took it easy, but it was warm 90's. I finished the back end of the half marathon course and feel ok

Today is a rest day, from reading all the literature, my biggest risk is over training. Yesterday, I ran the middle 7.5 miles of the actual course and felt great - both mentally and physically. There is a section that is an incline (200ft) over 1/3 of mile, but mostly flat. I plan to work my runs around the same course just figure different distances. I am resting today and will do another easy run tomorrow, maybe alittle biking later.

OK i lied, yesterday, I felt good and started out planning on 6mi but eventually went 9. Tried to pace myself so I could pick it up at the end, was moderately successful. But need to start tapering for sunday race. Today is rest, tomorrow last run before race.

Back at it, nice tempo run 5.6 miles on flat surface, alittle warm (low 90's). I didnt have energy but kept at it, I still am feeling the effects of the long run (siftness, soreness, no pain though). Probably need to extend recovery day from long run. KickBall tonite!!!!!

I rested yesterday, after a comfortable run of 5.5miles on Monday. My plan calls for 2mi easy run (9:16s) but honestly that seems like "why bother". I did my normal distance but much slower and paced. I am obsessing about the course - since it is in my neighborhood, I have been studying the course map trying to visualize the distance. Today, I am going to my tempo run for the middle section of the race about 7.5m.
