Mini Report for 27th Annual Santa Cruz Triathlon ~ 2009: Olympic Triathlon- Swim 1500M, Bike 24.9Mi, Run 6.2Mi Added a Mini Report.
Sunday, 09/20/2009 — Santa Cruz, CA
This was a "B" Race for me.
I rated my performance a 4 out of 5.
Race Notes: Pre-Race: Coming off my toe surgery I had only 4 weeks of solid training. Run mileage nowhere near normal, < 20miles a week. Drove down to SC in the morning, cost some sleep time but save hotel money.
Great weather conditions.
Swim ok, but no draft found. Swim split again too slow for my abilities. should be 1min faster relative to competition.
Bike: got out ok, feeling good, got passed by Inkinen and Mendes on the first 5 miles and that woke up my legs. Hammered the rest of the bike and stayed in viewing contact of Mendes. 58:59 bike split for 40k PR.
Run: felt ok at first and started too fast. Surprised about my run splits too the turn around. On the way back needed to dig deep but didn't give any ground. 36:.. run split very happy.
Bummed I didn't break 2hrs total by 35 seconds but considering the lay-off and the lack of run training can't really expect that. Mendes beat me by a bigger margin than at Wildflower.

Mini Report for Avia Wildflower Triathlons Festival 2009: Half Iron Triathlon- Swim 1.2Mi, Bike 56Mi, Run 13.1Mi Added a Mini Report.
Saturday, 05/02/2009 — Lake San Antonio, CA
This was a "A" Race for me.
I rated my performance a 5 out of 5.
Race Notes: Pre-Race: calm, stayed at Hotel, slept ok. Bagel, Coffee (half cup only), feeling a bit indigested. Took one Advil for sore toe left side. Worried about the run. Set up everything, eat one clifbar. 60 mins before start. one gel 10 minutes before start. Swim: great draft, not digging too deep T1: Focused, put on Garmin, lost only few seconds. Bike: started moderate, but not easy, trying to get HR down after first climb (<150, then <140). Got passed by 1, then later another but neither pulled away. HR most of the time in the 145 range. Back started to spasm, lower left side, tried to losen on no-wind sections. Needed to pee mile 35-40 (took too long). slowed down a bit and lost contact to two age group competitors (Naylor and Mendes) Nasty grade moderately hard but not all out. Still go energy after, but on the last 3 mile energy dwindled a bit. Nutrition: 2 bottles filled with 2.5 scoop perpetuum each, 1 scoop GU electrolyte, 1/2 scoop aminovital. Good tasty mix, got me 3/4 through the ride, 2 gels. 1/2 bottle of Gatorade, 1/2 bottle of water from aid stations. T2: happy about bike split, not too focused, forgot bib number belt, RUN: new running flats worked great. worried about sore middle toe, left side, btu was able to run through. Started moderately fast, HR now > 150. aprox 7 min mile (mile markers were off). NO POWER on the up hills, just trying to jog trough. Did not need to walk, good. Peed once more at mile 5. Picked up pace mile 6-11 (caught Mendes again). Out of the pit no power to pick up pace, but on track for a good split.Really enjoyed the finishing chute.
Race report: All that talk about rain and we had some of the best conditions ever saturday at Lake San Antonio for the long course. No arm warmers needed and it wasn't too hot for the Aero Helmets either. Our uniforms look great compared to all the others. From a distance the rear print on the tops looks like a tribal art drawing and as you get closer it turns into the Tea

Mini Report for Big Kahuna Triathlon 2008: Half/70.3 Triathlon-Swim 1.2 miles, Bike 56 miles, Run 13.1 miles Added a Mini Report.
Sunday, 09/07/2008 — Santa Cruz, CA
This was a "A" Race for me.
I rated my performance a 4 out of 5.
Race Notes: From what I remember more than a year later:
Wary before the race because haven't done a half IM since Wildflower 2007. Stayed at Motel, more relaxed than usual, easy atmosphere with Maria, Brian and Alli hanging there.
Very cool conditions race day.
Did not preview swim course so got off course on the way out (swam straight to pier rather than buoy further left). Probably didn't have a good draft. Swim split was 1-2minutes slower than hoped for.
Bike cold. Remember taking it easier on the first half out because did a training ride two weeks earlier with Brian where I blew up on the last 8 miles and Brian had to pull me home. Felt great at turn-around but blew past an aid station that I needed and so had to take the opposite side aid station after the turn-around. Got my bottle and felt better. Rode to T2 strong and had a greta bike split (PR).
Run, once again had a lousy run preparation, never get enough long runs and run consistency in. Motivated by the great bike I headed out like always too fast. The legs still in the 95RPM mode, got to remember that. Settled into a good rythm on the first 5 miles but it was very windy (head wind) and my lack of long runs started to show. I held up ok until mile 9 probably when my pace started to drift. Still reeled in some competitors from different waves (Vonach served me a little mental blow "you're only 10 minutes behind me", Van Vlerken was riding her MTB next to us for a while). The Brad Schmidt passed my and I tried to hang on because it was my AG podium, then blew up finally and just survived to the finish. The beach run wasn't fun and collapsed into the sand after.
Completely spent and somewhat disappointed that I didn't break 1:30 for the run. Really happy with my Half IM PR of 4:31 with insufficient long distance training (bike rides were mostly short also).
Had Knee pain shortly after this, race. Recovered well for a week only. Then tried to train up for
