Since 8/6/2008
Vincent Van Den Hoed
I run to have fun, test my limits and relax my mind. I ran consistently during high school and college, and then entered an extended period of intermittent running. Since I thought that I couldn't run fast, I decided to run longer--I ran my first marathon at age 20 and repeated the feat twice more, at five year intervals. In my thirties, my work commitments became central and my running got pushed aside. Inspired by athletes like Lance Armstrong, I have started a new chapter and am now more excited about and committed to running than ever before--I have run 4 marathons in the last 3 years. I firmly believe that it's never too late to improve! I am now running faster than when I was half my age and now realize that I can run fast and that running is an integral part of who I am. My goal is to run Boston, and maybe try at least one ultra-marathon.

I went on a 25 mile run today--I'm pretty pleased with how it went. I covered the first 13 miles in about 8min15sec pace, then slowed down to 9min15sec pace the next seven miles and managed to pick up the pace just a tad--about 9min mile--for the last five.

This was a "A" Race for me.
I rated my performance a 3 out of 5.
Race Notes: I had a strong consistent pace throughout the race, and finally finished under 100 minutes again for this distance. Slowly but surely I'm making my way back to top form.

This was a "A" Race for me.
I rated my performance a 4 out of 5.
Race Notes: I set a new pr--even if it is by only a few seconds! Compared to my training results ytd, I performed much better than expectations. Most importantly, I maintained a steady pace throughout and only slowed down a little during the last few miles. Had I maintained my focus and not let up when I knew that I would finish well, I probably could have gone faster--but that's all speculation. Out of 37 participants from Walnut Creek, I was number one!

This was a "B" Race for me.
I rated my performance a 3 out of 5.
Race Notes: I went out fast and couldn't maintain my pace. I was definitely disappointed that I didn't finish under 1:40. On the other hand, I managed the heat well and did rank more competitively than I would have predicted.

This was a "C" Race for me.
I rated my performance a 3 out of 5.
Race Notes: age grade--66.2% After I finished the race, I had energy to spare. But while I was running, I wasn't sure that I could maintain my pace. All 'n all, I was pleased to run the distance averaging sub-seven minute miles.
