Age: 70 Gender: Female Florence, Oregon, USA
Started running (well, trying) in Aug. of 2008. Thought it was a good hobby for 69 yr olds. Also wanted to keep up with my daughters and have some fun. Found out I love it, and for the first time in my life have the time to dedicate myself to it. My PR is getting better all the time! My goal is to move up to a 10K in 2009. Right now my back is sore, but I hope to get back to running soon, and in the mean time am walking. Are there any other 70 yr. old wannabies out there?

(What did you do today?)
I have been doing C25K for a long time now, and can run (but slowly) a 5K. Working towards the Scandia 4.4 mile on Aug 15th, with my three daughters. I'll do an easy couple of miles today.

Hi Audrey, Have you raced since the "Scandia"? I presume it is pretty cool there now. One thing I like about Southern California is the weather. I have run some in January and though I can't say it was warm I did run in shorts and a t-shirt. I have run a couple 5K races recently and plan to run three more before the end of the year, including a Thanksgiving morning 5K

Great to hear from you and I am impressed with your running. You are an amazing grandmother. It is nice that your daughters are into running. I know what you mean about these 80+ year old runners. I passed a lady in a marathon and asked her how old she was. Eighty four she said; she had been ahead of me for 25 miles before I finally got past her.Fortunately there was a marine layer overhead during the marathon and the clouds kept the temperature down in the 70s.  I sure hope the weather is cool for my half marathon. There is a rather steep long hill for the last mile that really hurts.More later, BillO

Hi Audrey,It has been a while; how is your running going? You were going to run the Rhody run; did you do it. What other races have you done?I did run the San Diego Rock 'n' Roll marathon at the end of May. I should say I ran the first half; The second half involved a lot of walking. I got blisters on my feet. I have never had that happen before. My knee did not go ballistic though it did not let me forget that it was there.I have ran two 5Ks since but rather slowly. I plan to do another on 8 August. It is right on the Mexican-US border and I have never ran it before. I am signed up for a half marathon on 16 August.I am having real trouble finding time to train (I am not one of those guys that will get up at 0400 to go out and run).run tall. BillO

Congratulations on your 5K today! Looks like you ran a good race. Was it hot? Did you win anything? I'm ready for a race report.

Hi Audrey! Good luck on the race in Salem, I won't be able to make that one. Are you going to run/walk that one or try for a non-stop run? I like the run/walk method because it helps me keep going, but building endurance is a good goal. What is a C25K? Which training method are you using? Cheri

Hi Audrey, Thank you for the nice message. I must say that you have a motivational story to share for others as well. I read your profile and was so impressed by your perseverance about improving your running skills. The decision you made and the accomplishments you had achieved are outstanding. And being a 69 year old to start in sports thru running is quite challenging but with your attitude of dedication and hardwork in your training (and a very caring Mom to her lovely daughters), you will definitely be successful in fulfilling your goal. Keep up the good work and God bless. Caringly, Rosemarie     O

WDYDT for Monday, June 1, 2009
I am getting ready for either a 5K or a 10K on June 6 at the Gold Dust Days Race in Gold Hill, Oregon. Today I ran my C25K , week 5 routine on the bike path, and did well. Then I spent another half hr. just running and walking. I have been adding real running time all spring, and have made good progress.

New Blog Entry: "Making slow but sure progress" Added a Journal Entry (Blog).
I run three or four times a week. In addition to other things, I am just now finished with week three of C25K. I spent over three weeks on it, but, I do other things like regular run/walks, long slow runs, and hills. May 2 I will be doing the 5K IN Eugene, Oregon, and am all ready, and very excited.

For 1st time since back problems three weeks ago, walked up the hill and on the Forest Service Road about 3 miles. Back didn't bother me unless I tried jogging, so must take it easy a little longer. Brought home a 5 pt. Elk rack!
