Today I did the second of the JD Duathlons at Ruapuna. It was done at a pace a bit quicker than I've been working at as I ramp up for Kona, meaning it hurt. Two highlights; meeting Murray 'the Holy Hammer' Lapworth, who stormed past me on the bike and was quickly lost from sight. Great to seeing my son take the intermediate age boys race, and John Newsom award him second in the girls race. Nice job to John and Dave Dwan, plus the many helpers, and the Canty Tri Club for organising a great event.

Just come home from one of those training sessions that are hard but awesome to do. I was down to do a 1.30 ride with 2 x 20 min big gear hills repeats, where your rpm is 50-60 and you're in your 'hard' zone (for me this is pulse 150-160). A year ago when I first started proper strength training, I could just get up the same hills sitting in my easiest gear, whereas now I'm flying up in a cog 3-4 gears higher, and enjoying the hurt. All credit to my coach, John Newsom for my progress. Thanks!

Just been to see Coach John tonight for my next installment of 'fun' as I lead up to Kona. As usual, I left feeling pretty fired up, and with a good solid base under my belt, I'm looking forward to the training increasing in time and intensity. 16 weeks to go...
