This was a "A" Race for me.
I rated my performance a 4 out of 5.
Race Notes: Executed the plan to go out at 7:40 and hang as long as possible. Was hoping for 20 plus but heart rate was high from the start and it would be this day. Popped at mile 16 and switched to survival mode. Great support from our team on bikes provided water at a couple key points. Hot day, windy and spread out water tables made for tough miles 21 +.
Doug and Heather swept me up just after Ann and Betsy were cheering at 10th street. Expecting them to fly past me fresh as a five miler, i took energy from their effort and joined in. We were all working pretty hard for the last two and the last half mile was awesome. All finish together and remarkably nobody passes out or barfs. Very cool. Heather gets her BQ by five minutes plus. Doug gets a good post ironman workout!
Hung out and watched everybody else come in. Sunny and warm temps made it great to be a spectator. There is no question that a different plan could have resulted in a better time, perhaps on the order 5-8 minutes but still 19 to get to that BQ. Overall, no regrets, happy that i went for it, pleased with the effort and thrilled with the finish sub 3:40.
